Why 2026 is The Year for an IT Refresh

Losing weight or reading more? Those New Year’s resolutions are so last year. This year, we want to maintain our digital spaces the same way we do our physical spaces. Just getting by on the bare minimum might have worked for a while, but we all know it’s not sustainable in the long term. Yes, for both!

With that in mind, here is a list of digital New Year’s resolutions for you to try in 2026!

1. Clean up those weak passwords

We’ve all been guilty of it, but in 2026, we shouldn’t continue using the same password for everything, from our Zooplus account to our own bank account. If only I could have a list of what they all are, you might think. Luckily for you, that’s where password managers come in. They keep all your passwords in a secure digital vault and can even log into your online accounts and update weak passwords on your behalf.

The Guardian highlighted that about 80% of data breaches are caused by compromised, reused and weak passwords.

Although it might take some time to organise, once all your passwords are securely stored, your digital security will thank you! If you’d like to set up a password manager, we can help! Need a hand in managing your business’s passwords? Reach out and find out how we can help!

2. Reach Inbox Zero

Inbox Zero is a productivity strategy that strives to declutter your mind by decluttering your inbox through the organisation of emails. If you checked how many you had right now, would that number scare you? I hope it’s not just me…

Inbox Zero is an email management strategy to keep your inbox empty by processing your emails immediately through quick decisions (delete, delegate, respond, defer, do) rather than letting them pile up.

Now we know it might not be viable to check every single email as soon as they come through, but setting aside some time each day- or even once a week- will save you from having to tackle that pressing accumulation of 582 emails all at once.

While you’re at it, unsubscribe from those pesky promotion emails that aren’t relevant to you anymore. Just because you went to crazy golf once two years ago, doesn’t mean you need weekly reminders of what’s on! You’ll thank yourself for it, and yeah, we might be speaking from experience…

3. Tidy your messy desktop

Nothing feels like starting a blank slate more than your desktop actually being blank. Eliminate unnecessary files (we’ve all got them!), designate a temporary storage folder and schedule regular declutter sessions.

You know what they say, clear desktop, clear mind (right?).

4. Organise your notifications

The more notifications you receive, the less important they start to feel. They are great when you need to receive reminders of your to-dos, security camera notifications, calls from your parents, but when you collectively have over 50 on just a few applications, it’s harder to see the important ones.

Don’t let your important notifications fade away in the noise of those that don’t matter! Set aside some time to disable irritating pings.

5. Back up your files

Everyone (individuals and organisations) risks losing files if they don’t back them up. As an individual, you could risk losing irreplaceable digital assets, from memories to medical data. As part of a company, you could lose financial records or customer data, all of which can damage your reputation.

We all rely on computers more than we realise, and if you’ve ever had one die on you or even just crash mid-project, you understand the frustrating feeling that comes with it. On top of this, ransomware attacks are still at a high, so it’s important to have your data backed up securely just in case.

Clean digital space, clean mind

By following these guidelines, you’ll start the year off on the right foot. An IT refresh in 2026 is not just a one-off technical chore; it’s about keeping your tech running smoothly for the year to come. Need a hand with your IT? We can help!
